How far should Spurs go to sign Blackburn's David Bentley?

160608_Bentley.jpgIt's no surprise that David Bentley has now come out and said he wants to leave Blackburn and Ewood Park this summer. Mark Hughes' departure to Manchester City was the best thing that could have happened for Bentley, after the gaffer had constantly refused to entertain talk of a move.

I've made my admiration for the player plain in the last few weeks and think he'd be a brilliant buy for our new-look midfield. Playing David on the right with Luka Modric in the middle instantly makes the centre of our park look exciting and thrown in dos Santos to the mix and my £670 season ticket might finally see some value for money.

I'm sure we'll be in for Bentley, we have looked at him before. I don't think getting rid of Aaron Lennon is the answer though. Keeping both the right-sided players will encourage some decent competition for the position and bring Lennon on and make him stronger.

It will also be great to have the two England stars in our ranks, ensuring we keep a fair number of Englishmen in our squad.

Bentley wants European football and like anyone would prefer Champions League games. That could open the door for Liverpool but Rafa Benitez's rotation policy will hopefully put David off.

Man City could well make a bid, which would be ironic and show a real two-faced side to Mark Hughes, but surely there must be a way to prise him away and back down to north London. Who cares if he played for the Gooners as a youngster, he is a quality player and would represent yet another quality bit of business for Tottenham Hotspur.

Let's hope Daniel Levy, Damien Comolli and Juande Ramos are working up some terms right now. Add David Bentley to the Spurs payroll and next season will begin to look very, very exciting indeed.

What do you think? Should Spurs do all they can to convince David Bentley to come to White Hart Lane? Post a comment below...

Very far in my opinion, I'd be happy to get him for anything up to about £16m.

lol nice artical...I think we should spend no more than £16 million for him.

Hes a good player, he'll make us stronger. English steel in the starting 11 is always good for the team.

Getting rid of Lennon ISNT the answer your right about that. I think Lennon will shine next year for some reason. I hope my feeling comes true.

Dos Santos, Bentley, Jenas, Lennon, Modric all in the midfield is getting me excited with all thoe players who can SCORE and asst good balls to the best front 2 players in the league Berbatov and Keane.

I dont think even the roatating would put put Bentley off, the fact Liverpool cant afford to splash out money is what makes me confident more he can come to a club like us and help us into the Champions League and

As long as we can keep our defenders strong then I can see us doing very well for ourselfs.

Bentley is totally and utterly overrated, I wouldn't go above £6m for him. This lad has ideas above his station in terms of how "talented" he is and I really wouldn't like to see this prima donna strutting his mediocre talents at the lane. David Beckham has recently upstaged him in the Capello friendlies and he is supposedly finished at International level!

I have to disagree. Despite his obvious abilities as a footballer I don't want us to have anything to do with a player who states publically that he wants to leave a club. I'm not naive enough to suggest he 'owes' Blackburn his allegiance for ever-more but he should allow the club to get a decent price for him rather than a knocked down £10m on the basis that he's made it clear he's desparate to leave. One year into his 5 year contract and if we're not in the CL maybe he'd be off again moaning which A) isn;t good for morale B)creates uncertainty and C) perpetuates instability.

I'd rather invest £2m in bringing Beckham over for 2 weeks to teack Lennon how to cross the ball!

Get Bentley, Arshavin, Capel, Frings and Diarra to complete an excellent midfield. Then kick out Lennon, Zokora, O'Hara, Tainio and Boateng, this would leave a mifield of:- Right Wing :- Bentley, Dos Santos, Taarabt, Defensive Midfield :- Frings, Diarra, Huddlestone, Attacking Midfield:- Modric, Jenas, Malbranque, Left Wing:- Arshavin, Capel, Rose. You never know that midfield may even impress Berbatov into staying.

I'd be happy for us to buy, whatever his price we'll break it down over 4 or 5 years anyway so it's not going to cost the earth in one go. I steer clear of making him the clubs top earner though as he still has lots to prove in terms of ability (I think there is a lot more to come from him) and in temperament. He is by no means the finished article so does not deserve financial parity with players such as Keane, Woodgate and Berbatov. Offer him the chance to shine and challenge him to get us in to the CL before he gets a nice fat pay rise. If he joins then great, if not, we don't want him.

How far sould spurs go?
About as far as it is from the Highbury Library to the Hemorrhoids Stadium.

Keep Lennon and if none of these Spanish wingers come off, buy Plasil or Inler.

Get rid of O'Hara?!?! Are you mental? Did you watch him play last season... He shone in so many matches, against arsenal for one... Not forgetting even keeping control of Ronaldo in the FA cup, it wasn't even his normal position.

O'hara in my eyes has been one of the best breakthrough players since King.

Glad someone else has the sense to see not see it as a case of 'sign Bentley, get rid of Lennon' or'keep Lennon, get rid of Bentley'!
Folk seem to foget very quickly that Lennon was originally brought in as cover/competition for REouteledge (who, inexplicably, pretty much sank without a trace). And while he has failed to ignite recently, in the way that we hoped, it shouldn't be forgotten that the main criticism levelled at him, that there is no end product (either goals or crosses), is exactly the same as levelled at Ronaldo when he first burst onto the scene.
Lennon is still very young.
That said, IMHO Bentley is m ustard, and I would love to see him at the Lane. Don't fget into a bidding war - but if the asking price is £15 mill. Spurs should match it.

i couldnt agree more abut o'hara he woz class last season, and every1 seems 2 b 4gettin Bale he in my eyes is 1 of the most promising youngsters in the world u watch him how he develops in the next couple of years. Im behind you all the way Ramos i have faith in you!!!

Posted by: the yidd father | June 16, 2008 3:43 PM

im behind u Ramos whatever u decide 2 do i have faith in ya. I agree with the comment about o'hara i think he played superb last season very bright hard working young lad and i think another potential player who will 1 day be player of the year is Gareth bale who every1 seems 2 be forgetting about. Bentley is a class act and his attitude is defiant because he always has to prove himself. And he will have to do that at Spurs. This will drive him to excel in his development and make him an even better player. Anything between £10 and £13 mill would be a good price for Spurs and Blackburn.

BTW this talk about OHara is complete rubbish Ramos clearly rates him or he wouldn't have given him a new 5 year contract at the very beginning of the summer.

Posted by: Greekos | June 16, 2008 4:37 PM

I think we should all back Ramos if he goes for Bentley, There is no doubt the lad is a class act the fact he left Ar5ena1 to better himself makes him a star in my mind. He will improve the midfield at Spurs if we got him I am sure, Whilst I believe we should keep Lennon at the moment Bentley is the better player. I agree with most posts that say buy him, If Spurs pay 10 to 12 million I think it would be money well spent.

Lets not forget that he is a Spurs supporter too. That has to count for something. Never mind that he played for the Frogs down the road, home is where the heart is!

only thing thats worrying is his partying if he comes back to london not sure if he would be able to stay on the straight and narrow.?

Posted by: gettingthereslowly | June 17, 2008 2:34 PM

Lennon should be the first out the door, he has got worse since we signed him, cant cross, cant shoot and now he even struggles to beat a man. just another simon davies who we should have cashed in on when we had the chance. although 3.5mil or whatever we got for davies was a great deal....
